Laser Dentistry Q & A

What is laser dentistry?

The term “laser” is an acronym of light amplification by the stimulated emission of radiation. Lasers essentially condense light energy to alter targeted tissue. In dental applications, those tissues include teeth, bone, and gums.

Laser dentistry offers a high degree of precision, allowing your dentist to remove the exact amount of tissue desired. This means less bleeding and a more comfortable treatment experience.

What kinds of laser dentistry treatments are available?

Sethi Dental offers a number of laser dentistry treatments. Laser technology can remove all areas of decay in preparation for a dental filling. This approach is far more comfortable than traditional drilling.

Lasers can also help improve gum tissue contouring. This is a great way to treat a “gummy” smile or visually lengthen teeth. Laser treatments also reduce tooth sensitivity.

Sethi Dental also uses laser technology to correct tongue tie and lip tie. Beneath your tongue and on the inside portion of your upper lip is a thin band of tissue called a frenulum. This tissue is important during early development, but normally thins and recedes over time.

In some children, the frenulum remains fully in place, which limits the ability of the lip or tongue to move normally. Laser treatment can safely and effectively release that band of tissue to permit free movement.

How long is the recovery process following laser dentistry procedures?

One of the benefits of laser treatments is the manner in which the laser alters targeted tissue. The laser energy creates heat that seals off the tiny blood vessels opened during the procedure. This occurs almost instantaneously, preventing extensive bleeding both during and after the procedure.

Laser dentistry procedures usually have shorter recovery times than traditional approaches that use a scalpel or other cutting tool to alter tissue. Lasers eliminate bacteria in the treatment area, further reducing the risk of infection.

Before your procedure your dentist provides detailed recovery instructions. Adhering to these guidelines helps ease the recovery process.
