Dentures Q & A

What are dentures?

Dentures are removable dental devices that replace some or all of your missing teeth. There are two primary types of dentures: full and partial.

Full dentures

Full dentures replace all of your upper or lower teeth. They are made of an acrylic base that secures individual false teeth. Each tooth is sculpted to have the same contouring and irregularities as natural teeth.

Partial dentures

As the name implies, partial dentures replace only a few missing teeth. They are crafted to fit around your remaining natural teeth to create a secure and comfortable fit. No two sets of partial dentures are ever exactly alike.

There is also an option called implant-supported dentures. These systems use four implanted posts to secure an upper or lower span of false teeth.

What are the benefits of dentures over other tooth replacement options?

As compared with dental implants, dentures are a more affordable option. That said, even the best set of dentures will eventually need to be repaired or replaced, so be sure to factor those costs in when making treatment decisions.

Today’s dentures are far more comfortable, durable, and attractive than the options available to previous generations. The team at Sethi Dental strive to create well-fitting dentures that won’t shift or come out and require no denture adhesive to stay in position.

How long does it take to get used to wearing a new set of dentures?

It takes some time to get used to the feel of a new set of dentures. Expect an adjustment period of a couple of weeks, during which time you might find yourself running your tongue around your new dentures or noticing them while they are in place.

Before long you’ll adjust to the feel of your new dentures, and wearing them will become just another part of your daily routine. Most people truly enjoy the freedom to eat a full range of foods and smile without worrying about missing teeth.

Taking great care of your dentures means treating them much like natural teeth. Never bite down aggressively on hard foods or non-food items. Take care to avoid dropping your dentures when placing or removing them. Brush your dentures thoroughly to remove all food particles and bacteria.
